FDA Says it’s Taken 21,000 reports of Wen Hair Care Complaints

wen soapMesh News Desk, July 20, 2016 ~ The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says it has received 127 adverse event reports about the WEN Hair products.

Promoted on television by celebrity stylist, Chaz Dean, the FDA says his office has received 21,000 complaints. Complaints include reports of balding, rashes and hair breakage. See the FDA notice here.

WEN offers a natural, botanical, herbal cleaning solution without the use of harsh sulfates found in most shampoos that make the suds. The WEN website says

Is WEN® safe?

We take great pride in the quality of WEN® products and every bottle is produced to meet our high standards. We want all of you to have positive experiences with our products, and encourage anyone with questions to contact us. We have great sympathy for anyone experiencing hair loss or scalp issues, but there is no scientific evidence that points to the WEN® brand as a cause. Since 2008, we’ve shipped well over 10 million WEN®products and are delighted to hear from so many of you about the benefits and results you have experienced using WEN®.

A complaint does not mean it is an actual injury but could represent an individual looking to join a “class action” and perhaps receive some money.  Considering that the ads featuring actress Alyssa Milano were very popular and distributed by online marketer Gunthy Renker, it’s likely many people have seen and even purchased the products. There have been 40 million bottles sold if you believe Mr. Dean

The Dallas law firm of Christiansen Davis LLC has filed a product liability lawsuit in Los Angeles.

Interesting with 100,000 pelvic mesh complaints, there was never a posting on the FDA’s website with how to complain to the FDA.  So we are borrowing the Wen Hair complaint file and posting it here.

Submit a Complaint: How to Report a Cosmetic-Related Problem

In the case of a reaction or problem with a cosmetic product, the first step is to stop using the product and contact your healthcare provider. FDA does not provide medical advice. Then, report the problem to FDA.

Tell FDA If You Experience:

  • A reaction after using a cosmetic, such as a rash, redness, burn, hair loss, headache, infection, illness or any other unexpected reaction, whether or not it required medical treatment.
  • A problem with a cosmetic product, such as a bad smell, color change, other sign of contamination, or foreign material in the product.

Types of Products that are Considered Cosmetics

Cosmetics products are not the same as drug products, and they are regulated differently by FDA. Here are some examples of cosmetic products:

  • Tattoos and permanent makeup
  • Face and body cleansers, moisturizers and other skin lotions and creams
  • Deodorants and makeup
  • Baby lotions and oils
  • Hair care products, dyes, conditioners, straighteners/relaxers, perms
  • Hair removal creams
  • Nail polishes
  • Shaving products
  • Perfumes and colognes
  • Face paints and temporary tattoos

How to Report a Problem with Cosmetics

If you are a consumer, health professional, or member of the cosmetics industry who wants to voluntarily report a complaint or adverse event (illness or serious allergic reaction) related to a cosmetic, you have three choices:

The law does not require cosmetic companies to report problems to FDA. Therefore, your report is very important in order to help keep the cosmetics market safe. When you contact FDA, you are asked to include the following information in your report, if known:

  • About the Person Affected
    • Name and contact information (address, phone, and e-mail address)
    • Age, gender, and ethnicity
  • About the Product
    • Name of the product and the manufacturer
    • Product codes or identifying marks on the label or container [Note: do not discard the product packaging and labeling. They provide information that will help FDA investigate the problem]
    • When and where the product was purchased
  • About the Problem
    • Description of the reaction or problem
    • Description of medical treatment provided, if any

What FDA Will Do with Your Report

Once a report is received:

  • FDA will keep your report confidential.
  • FDA will add the report to our database so that we can see if other people are reporting the same problem.
  • FDA will use the information to determine if the product or similar products have a history of problems and represent a public health concern that needs to be addressed.

FDA may not take action on every report received, but the Agency does check all reports to determine if action is necessary to protect the public health.

If they’ve taken 21,000 cases for a hair product, then surely they’ve had triple that for MESH. Only one can assume that Wen doesn’t own the FDA, too.

    • Jane Akre says:

I just thought it was interesting how responsive the FDA is with 127 adverse event reports. The 21,000 went to the company.

If we’re borrowing the FDA link used to complain about WEN products, are we supposed to make our mesh complaint there too? From reading the FDA page by following that “borrowed” link; it describes what a cosmetic product is, and that the link is for complaints about cosmetic products… Mesh, as many here know- **and I write it this way bcuz it took me almost 2yrs to learn that I had a prosthetic implant inside me, i.e. my mesh** –>Many here know that mesh is a medical device/prosthetic implant and or I don’t know what else to even call it. Anyway all my rambling here is basically asking; How & where do we file a complaint about our Mesh to the FDA properly? I haven’t done so yet & its been four years of living hell and life threatening complications, surgeries, etc. I want to file a complaint to the FDA about my BARD 3D-Max mesh implant but following your “borrowed link” to do so is confusing- Thank you

Bet those who used this product receive some kind of compensation long before we do. Had mine filed for 3 yrs but implant was in January 06. Had issues prior to filing but could never get a doc to tell me it was the problem. Bleeding and pain and infection long before that. Should not bleed after a hysterectomy. Bleeding due to erotion of mesh so open infected wound inside my vagina. But hey pay these women who get a rash from the shampoo ignore us who have gone through 4 plus surgeries ,infection, job loss, relationships lost, loss our homes, come on now. When is this going to blow wide open and expose these companies very publicly . Yes they have a lot of money and pull. But with well over 100,000 cases in US alone not really counting them all or other countries. I find it so hard to believe there is no major news station that will do a major story on this travesty of justice. How we go ignored is so beyond comprehension. I thought exposing big news was what most of these big channels were all about. Guess they are all gutless to report the truth. These companies are shameless. Hear about JNJ huge profits stock prices going up and up. Well hell yes cause even if their products and pills and implants are bad they seem to be above any retribution for their products. Dam FDA will pull some shampoo but not mesh that is causing life threatning sometimes horrible effects in a majority of women that have it. Alex Gorsky should be sitting in prison not in the lap of luxury.

Among the above which is absolutely excellent, should also be HAIR DYE with PPD and other toxins that literally change a persons immune system. This is interesting become most suits filed are hidden, settled out of court and big money in the cosmetic industry seem to control everything with PPD/Toxins that harm all who use it whether it is the first time using this product or over time what happens to the body by using these toxic products. When your head blows up after using hair dye ….something is wrong….when your hair falls out and your body breaks out from top to bottom…..something is wrong….when you health issues take a dive with all sorts of serious issues because you have used permanent hair dye…..something is wrong ….it is all about money, greed, and what is wrong is wrong ….Thanks so much for your dedication to so many issues we face today that is wrong while bringing us together to read, learn, share, and most of all help one another thru critical times in our lives while something that has gone wrong when it should have been right before another person can be harmed again and again for all the wrong reasons …
